La cultura letteraria alle soglie del nuovo millennio appare in una fase di traghettamento da un sistema ad un altro. Il passaggio dalla fissità del supporto cartaceo alla dinamica instabilità del documento elettronico produce ricadute sostanziali sull’intero sistema di trasmissione e sviluppo dei saperi. Partendo dall’assunto che supporto e sistema di scrittura plasmano la mentalità, l’autore esamina le principali teorie che hanno messo in relazione i due ambiti, dalle origini della scrittura alfabetica, fino all’affermazione dei media moderni. Viene poi delineata una breve storia della scrittura informatica, scandita attraverso le sue fasi essenziali: dai pionieristici anni Ottanta fino alla multimedialità e agli ipertesti negli anni duemila. L’avvento del documento digitale rivoluziona ogni ambito della comunicazione, introducendo nuovi generi: chat, e-mail, MUD e favorendo l’ibridazione di quelli tradizionali. Appare dunque necessario ripensare la filologia attraverso uno sfruttamento proficuo dei nuovi strumenti tecnologici. Nasce con questo scopo l’esperienza del sito Varianti Digitali.
At the turn of the new millennium literary culture appears in a phase of changing from one system to another. The transition from the fixity of paper to the dynamic instability of electronic documents produces substantial impact on the entire system of development and transmission of knowledge. Assuming that writing system and support shape the mentality, the author examines the main theories that have linked the two areas, from the origins of alphabetic writing, to the birth of modern media. It is then outlined a brief history of the computer writing, through its essential phases: from pioneering Eighties up to multimedia and hypertext in the new millennium. The advent of the digital document revolutionizes every aspect of writing, introducing new genres: chat, e-mail, MUD, and favoring hybridization of the traditional ones. It is therefore necessary to rethink philology through profitable exploitation of new technological tools. The experience of the site Varianti Digitali was created with this purpose.
